Today’s focus is on the PIUSI OCIO tank level sensor in outdoor and underground integrated fire prevention systems, an instrument for monitoring the tank fluid level.

WHEN WAS PIUSI OCIO BORN?

PIUSI OCIO was born in 2001 when the need to monitor tank fluid levels became increasingly crucial. Among other uses, OCIO is also developed to be suitable for fire protection applications.

WHERE IS OCIO USED?

PIUSI OCIO is a digital tank level indicator that is easy to install, set up, and use.

Thus far, OCIOs have been installed on thousands of fuel and AdBlue tanks of any size and in more than 135 different countries, thanks to their ease of use. OCIO fluid management and monitoring system serves these main industries:

  • Agriculture
  • Trucking
  • Auto repair shops
  • Mining/construction

However, its versatility also sees it used in integrated underground and outdoor fire prevention systems because it is designed and developed in accordance with current UNI EN 11292 and UNI EN 12845 standards.

PIUSI OCIO FOR FIREFIGHTING SYSTEMS

In order to comply with the current fire safety laws, many companies with a high risk load must install a fire extinguishing system with a water tank attached. The firefighting system comes into operation in the event of a fire breaking out and the fire alarm sounding.

A reliable level indicator is required in order to check the water reserve available in the tank and to be sure that in the event of an alarm being triggered, water is present for the various distribution points. This is where the OCIO level indicator comes in. By accurately indicating the liquid level inside the tank, it keeps the operator informed of the amount of water present at all times.

The versatility and ease of use of OCIO, together with its stainless steel probe, make it easy to configure the tank, and the minimum and maximum water levels inside. For particular applications, the control panel can also be installed at a distance (up to 50m) from the water storage tank to simplify quantity control by operators. In addition, an analogue output (4-20mAmp) and a digital output (8 RS485) allow OCIO to be integrated into an existing control panel in a firefighting system.

HOW PIUSI OCIO WORKS

OCIO is a digital tank level sensor that monitors the fluid level inside the air pressure tank. By means of a small tube inside the tank, the system detects the static pressure generated by the fluid height and displays the fluid level or volume.
The principle is to measure the pressure at the bottom of the tank and use that value to calculate the fluid height inside the tank.

The system consists of:

  • A tube for static pressure detection. The tube with the sensor is inserted from the top and immersed in the liquid until it touches the bottom of the tank.
  • A control unit for level display and system management. The unit is equipped with intuitive and comprehensive software and allows the connection of two alarm or blocking devices.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

External output

a) The maximum and minimum

Level alarms operate a relay that closes and opens the dry contacts. Contact jumpers can be connected to any device (light or other) which is activated by the relay driven by the circuit board. The dry contacts function as remote switches for external devices that must be powered separately. Each contact can support up to 250 Vac -5 Amp (30 VDC - 5 Amp).

b) Output to PC/external devices. An RS 485 output with proprietary protocol is available for connection with an external system for continuous reading of the fluid level in the tank. Alternatively, an external output with 4-20 mAmp output can be requested.
